Elad Larom , Cave of Multiplication

Curator: Smadar Keren

Cave of Multiplication, Elad Larom's first museal solo show, includes selected works from the last decade (2009-2017). The works touch upon cultural, social, and political phenomena that have a clear local context. They exhibit fragments of reality that are seemingly familiar but in effect surreal, containing representations from various worlds, often quite remote from one another and even contradictory, fused into a single homogenous pictorial composition. The resulting pieces are painterly and cinematic, charged with self-awareness, enchantment, humor, and anxiety, in which figures, situations, objects, or events are part of a fragmented, compressed, powerful narrative, where the familiar becomes strange, and the foreign is knowable.

In this show, Larom marks the place we live in as combustible space. His works confront ideological, political, and psychological mechanisms with theological, mystic, and pseudo-religious schools of thought. The range of the displayed works creates a wide array of references and contexts – in both visuals and content. At their base – like a unifying sub-conscious – lies the study of architypes, those ancient patterns or types that are imprinted upon us as humans and shape us as a society. These are articulated through various representations of rituals, of myths and symbols, and in the contemporary expressions of ceremonial rituals identified with ancient cultures – "poetical study cases with an exotic nature," as the artist describes them.

Among the images, several motifs stand out in their heightened presence, such as the clan motif or the mask image, as well as various body and face representations. These motifs appear throughout the works in numerous formal manifestations that traverse identity, time, and culture. Displaying all the works in the same space, simultaneously and with no hierarchy, suggests clear parallels between foreign myths and contradicting ideologies. Thus the existential absurdity of the local reality, in which rituals of modern sacrifice are a common occurrence. And perhaps, in a fleeting moment of awareness and recognition, the viewer looking at the works might see in them no other but his own image. The title of the show is another gesture by Larom that expands the idea of presentation. It suggests viewing a concrete place, with clear political connotations, as an abstract, ambiguous concept that invites new interpretations.

Elad Larom (b. 1976) holds an MFA from Bezalel Academy of Arts and a BFA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy of Art and Design in Amsterdam. So far he has had four solo shows, the most recent in 2016, at the White City Center in Tel Aviv. He has participated in several group shows in Israel, Europe, and North America, including shows at the Tel Aviv University Gallery, Artist's House in Jerusalem, Maltz Museum  in the US, W139 Gallery in Amsterdam, and Kunstlerhaus FRISE in Hamburg. Since 2010 Larom has been serving as lecturer and faculty member at Bezalel.
